Percussion Solo & Ensemble Success
Posted by: | CommentsOn Friday, March 5, the FHS Percussion Department presented An Evening of Percussion. The FHS percussionists performed solos and ensembles followed by a marching percussion clinic which included the incoming 8th grade percussionists from Friendswood Junior High. The clinician for the evening was Mr. Rick Rodriguez from Spring HS. Mr. Rodriguez is a nationally know conductor, composer, and instructor of percussion. Mr. Rodriguez will be writing the battery percussion parts for the FHS Marching Band next fall.
Earning Excellent ratings in solo performance were Joey Mains, Andrew Wiley, Jillian Olson, Marissa Persaud, Conner Borne, Dan Rutledge, and Austin Martin.
Earning Superior ratings in solo performance were Daniel Du, Michael Gregory, Dino Georgeton, Blake Disiere, Connor Yee, Will Hibbs, Sarah Meyer, Tayler Guidry, Brian Markley, Ryan Bynum, Jenny Baglio, Brooke Mendenhall, Garrett Bynum, Nader Asgari, Nick Scarpa, JP Hranitzky, Daniel Nandin, Jordan Salley, Kathleen Cain and Darian Larsen.

Solo & Ensemble Success

On Saturday, Feb. 6, FHS Band students from Symphonic, Concert I and Concert II competed at the Region 17 UIL Solo & Ensemble contest at Clear Creek High School. The students performed individually and in small groups for judges from around the Houston area and earned 113 medals.
Winning a Bronze medal was Andres Soto. Winning Silver Medals were Kristen Taylor, Danielle Gruber, Melanie Forsyth, Alex Taylor, Sam Brackett, Matthew Laitkep, Scott Morse, Jordan Devera, John-Daniel Ryan, Brandon Haskins, Emily Irby, Kieth Shannon, JC Tyer, Josh Warren, and Taylor Watson.

FHS Band sets NEW record at Region Band Auditions
Posted by: | CommentsThe Friendswood High School Band recently participated in the Texas Music Educators Association All-District and All-Region Band auditions for Region 17. The FHS Band had 72 qualify for the All-District Band, of those, 59 qualified for the All Region Band, and 33 of those qualified for Area Band and a chance to audition for the All-State Band on January 9. The 59 qualifying for All-Region Band is a new record for the Friendswood High School Band.

MARCHING BAND - STATE SILVER MEDALIST
Posted by: | CommentsMarching Band Wins Silver Medal: The Friendswood High School Marching band won the Silver Medal at the UIL AAAA State Marching Band Contest. The contest was held in the Alamodome on Nov. 2. There were 26 AAAA bands from across the state in the preliminary competition. Ten of those bands advanced on to the finals that evening.
This is the 5th consecutive trip to the State Marching Contest and 4th Finals appearence and 3rd Silver Medal for the the Mighty Mustang Band this decade. The students performed and extremely high level and did a fantastic job! Directors of the Band are Gregory Dick, Aaron Brown, Julio Sanchez, and Ron Barnett.
UIL Area F Champions
Posted by: | CommentsThe FHS Band earned all 5 1st place votes earning the title of UIL Area F Champions. The band marched their best show of the year enroute to advancing to the State Contest on Nov. 2 in the Alamodome. We are very proud of the students for their hard work and dedication. Many thanks to the Pit Crew, Chaperones, Food providers, Booster Club, and parents for all of your support! More information will come out Monday.
Lone Star Preview 4A Champions
Posted by: | CommentsCongratulations to the Mighty Mustang Band for being named the Lone Star Preview Class 4A Champion and earning a spot in the finals. That evening, The Mustang Band finished 2nd overall in the entire contest, regardless of class, to Brazoswood HS. There were a total of 24 bands competing mostly 5A’s. The Mustang Band won the Outstanding Visual, Outstanding General Effect, and Outstanding Color Guard Awards in Class 4A. In the finals, the Mustang Band won the Outstanding Music Performance Award. This is the highest finish ever by the Mustang Band at the Lone Star Preview. Congratulations to the students for their hard work and determination! Many thanks to all of the parents who made the whole day possible! UIL Contest is Tuesday night, 6:45pm, at Dickinson HS. Come out and support the band!
WIND ENSEMBLE NAMED TMEA AAAA HONOR BAND!
Posted by: | CommentsThe Friendswood High School Wind Ensemble has been named the Texas Music Educators Association AAAA Honor Band. This is the 2nd time in a row to win the highest honor that a AAAA band can win in Texas. Congratulations to all of the students, parents, and boosters for being so supportive of the total band program. Because of this honor, the Wind Ensemble will perform at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention in San Antonio this coming February of 2010. Congratulations to the senior band members of the Wind Ensemble of 2009. Come join us in San Antonio in February and be recognized for your achievement.

SOUSA FOUNDATION SUDLER FLAG OF HONOR
Posted by: | CommentsThe Friendswood High School Band was awarded the Sudler Flag of Honor in 2006.
The Sudler Flag of Honor is an international award recognizing high school concert bands of outstanding musical excellence. The award is administered by the John Philip Sousa Foundation.
The purpose of the award is to identify, recognize and honor high school band programs internationally that have demonstrated particularly significant high standards of excellence in concert activities over a period of several years.
Criteria
The band must have achieved and maintained a high standard of excellence in the concert area over a period of several years.
The concert band will have placed itself in situations where there has been opportunity for evaluation by qualified persons or has been rated “superior” at state, regional, or national levels in concert activities.
The band program must offer its participants a complete and balanced program of musical activities including concert, solo, ensemble, and marching areas.
The band should have performed at regional, state, national, and professional meetings of significance. These can include but are not limited to state music conventions, regional or national MENC meetings, and state or national band association conventions.
The director must have been incumbent in his/her position for at least seven years, including the current year.
A number of the students in the band should have participated in district and all-state honor bands or similar all-area groups.
We are extremely proud of the Friendswood High School band for distinguishing itself as a world class band program.
